LM Studio Installation Guide for SpiritBox

Complete step-by-step guide to downloading, installing, and configuring LM Studio - the local AI engine that powers SpiritBox.

1. What is LM Studio?

LM Studio is a desktop application that simplifies the process of running Large Language Models (LLMs) on your local machine. It provides a user-friendly interface to discover, download, and chat with various open-source LLMs without needing an internet connection after the initial download.

For SpiritBox, LM Studio acts as the local brain, allowing Spirit Guides to interact with you seamlessly by leveraging the computational power of your own computer.

2. System Requirements

While LM Studio can run on most modern computers, the performance largely depends on your system's specifications. For a smooth experience with SpiritBox:

Operating System

Windows 10/11, macOS (Intel or Apple Silicon), or Linux

Processor (CPU)

A modern multi-core processor is highly recommended

Memory (RAM)

16GB minimum for smaller models. 32GB or more highly advisable for larger models or extensive context windows.

Graphics Card (GPU)

Optional but recommended. A dedicated GPU with 8GB or more VRAM will significantly accelerate performance. NVIDIA GPUs are generally well-supported.

Storage

Sufficient free disk space. Models can range from a few gigabytes to tens of gigabytes.

3. Downloading LM Studio

1

Open your web browser and navigate to: https://lmstudio.ai/

2

Click the prominent download button for your operating system (e.g., "Download LM Studio for Windows")

3

Once complete, you'll have an executable file (e.g., LM-Studio-0.x.x.exe on Windows)

Troubleshooting: If the download doesn't start automatically, look for alternative download options on the page.

4. Installing LM Studio

For Windows

  1. Locate the downloaded .exe file
  2. Double-click to start installation
  3. Click Yes on User Account Control (UAC) prompt
  4. Click Next in the Setup Wizard
  5. Select I Agree to accept license terms
  6. Use the default installation path (recommended)
  7. Click Install and wait for completion
  8. Click Finish when done

For macOS

  1. Locate the downloaded .dmg file
  2. Double-click to open it
  3. Drag the LM Studio icon to the Applications folder
  4. Close the window and eject the disk image

For Linux (AppImage)

  1. Locate the downloaded .AppImage file
  2. Open terminal and navigate to download directory: cd ~/Downloads
  3. Make executable: chmod +x LM-Studio-0.x.x.AppImage
  4. Run: ./LM-Studio-0.x.x.AppImage

5. First-Time Setup & LLM Download

Launch LM Studio

Open LM Studio from your Start Menu (Windows), Applications folder (macOS), or AppImage (Linux).

Search for a Model

On the left sidebar, find the search/discover section. Type: gemma-3-12b-it-qat

✨ Why gemma-3-12b-it-qat?

This model is specifically designed for conversational AI and can handle large context windows - crucial for SpiritBox since each Spirit Guide has extensive configuration, and switching guides mid-conversation requires maintaining continuity.

Understanding Quantization

You'll see different versions like Q4_K_M, Q5_K_S. These affect size and performance:

Lower (Q3, Q4)

  • ✓ Smaller file size
  • ✓ Faster inference
  • − Slightly less accurate

Higher (Q5, Q8)

  • + More accurate
  • − Larger file size
  • − Slower inference

Recommendation: Start with Q4_K_M or Q5_K_M. If slow, try Q3. If you have powerful hardware, try Q5 or Q8.

Download the Model

Click the Download button next to your chosen model. Download progress will be displayed. This may take time depending on your connection.

6. Configuring the LM Studio Server for SpiritBox

SpiritBox communicates with LM Studio through its local server. Follow these steps:

1

Access Developer Settings

Look for a Settings or Developer icon (usually left sidebar or top menu). Click to open settings.

2

Enable Local Server

Find "Local Server" or "API Server" section. Toggle it ON.

3

Verify Default Settings

Ensure these values are set:

Host: localhost (or 127.0.0.1)
Port: 1234
URL: http://localhost:1234
4

Start the Server

Click "Start Server" or "Launch Server" button. A console/log might appear confirming the server is running.

Important: Do NOT change the default port (1234) or host (localhost). SpiritBox is configured to use these exact values.

7. Running LM Studio in the Background

Minimize to Tray

After starting the server, you can close the LM Studio window. It will minimize to your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (macOS/Linux) and continue running in the background.

Performance Impact

LM Studio running in the background will consume significant CPU, RAM, and potentially GPU resources. This can affect other applications' performance.

Closing LM Studio

When finished with SpiritBox, right-click the LM Studio icon in system tray/menu bar and select "Quit" or "Exit" to free up resources.

💡 Pro Tip: If you use SpiritBox frequently, consider leaving LM Studio running to avoid the model load time each session.

🎉 Congratulations!

You've successfully installed and configured LM Studio. Your system is now ready to power SpiritBox!
